Lame. Pointless. Tiresome. Stupid. Gimmicky. Any and all of these words can be used to describe America’s sudden infatuation with unofficial national holidays. For the most part, these designated observances are marketing tools for the uncreative.
Yet for every National Roast Suckling Pig Day, there is another fake holiday rooted in historical relevance, hence the signifcance of April 7. The day hyped as National Beer Day here in the United States actually has an interesting backstory.
The story goes like this: On March 22, 1933 President Franklin D. Roosevelt made an off-handed comment about wanting to drink a beer just as he signed the Cullen-Harrison Act into law. The legislation went into effect on April 7 of that year, making it legal for people to buy, sell and drink beer with an ABV of 3.2%. The history books tell us that Roosevelt matter-of-factly stated: “I think this would be a good time for a beer.”
Today, we use the holiday to extol the virtues of beer here in America’s Best Beer-Drinking City. At the Philly Loves Beer offices, we naturally decided this would be the perfect time to announce that Opening Tap tickets are now ON SALE. Click here to purchase tickets to the 10-Year Anniversary Gala at The Fillmore on Thursday, June 1 from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Yes, go back and re-read that because it is most definitely NOT a typo.
Opening Tap 2017, in conjunction with the all-day slumber party known as the Hammer of Glory Relay, will occur on a Thursday, instead of a Friday. Don’t worry, we already filled out the paperwork and your boss is totally fine with you taking a “personal day.” Actually, we went all Corleone on your boss and made them an offer they couldn’t refuse.
(Translation: We held the HOG to their head and suddenly you had TWO DAYS OFF: Thursday, June 1 and Friday, June 2.) Go figure. Call it a Philly Loves Beer miracle!)
Please stay tuned to our social media channels for future updates on events for Philly Beer Week 2017. Since it is our milestone 10th Anniversary Celebration, we’re thinking it makes sense to can something special. Aluminum tall boys are all the rage, from what our cool brewer friends tell us.
Once again, we want to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to our all our hardcore fans and long-time participants. And if you haven't yet signed on the dotted line for 2017, well, enrollment remains open. Talk to Brandon and get all the facts on how to join!
When we started this thing in 2007, we had no idea people would travel from all over the country to party with us. Back then, we were happy with a small blurb in the Inquirer. Now, we field calls from The Washington Post and Esquire. It truly has been a remarkable ride and we can’t wait to share this year’s festivities with everyone.
Save the Date: June 1. Cheers to 10 Years of Beers!
